MJW 2017 important destinations

The Danner Rotunda, Die Neue Sammlung, Munich

As almost every year since 1959 (there has been one exception in 1986 when the subsidy got discontinued) the exhibition known as Schmuck takes place in Munich. The event has been so much talked about that it seems impossible to say something new about its appearance. But exhibitions in Munich happen every year and it gives us new material to discuss. As the title of this article I have chosen the expression important destinations. That might sound a bit ambitious but let’s say that these are important destinations for me and it makes it all sound right again.

I want to make it clear that there are several separate events relating to jewellery taking place in Munich in early spring and all together they can be called Munich Jewellery Week (MJW). This is a term that Current Obsession magazine came up with in 2015.

Before it would be called – “events relating to jewellery during the special show Schmuck at Internationale Handwerksmesse Munich (IHM)” and that is the way some institutions still refer to the event. That is because Schmuck exhibition is the key event of MJW. It is not allowed to make photos in the Schmuck exhibition, because a catalogue is for sale, so I don’t have photos from the IHM. There are several other important components that build the whole. Within IHM you can find Talente – the young designer (or as they are called in the IHM brochure – craft professionals) competition that awards in several categories jewellery being one of them , Exampla – presenting craftsmanship and Meister Der Moderne – presenting modern works in the field of arts and crafts and the applied arts.

There were several galleries presented in IHM this year. Galerie Spektrum, ATTA Gallery, Galerie Rosemarie Jäger, Galerie Marzee, Galerie Ra and Platina. It is always nice to step by the Chrome Yellow Books booth and this time with benefits – two of the Art Jewellery Forum (AJF) books – Shows and Tales—On Jewelry Exhibition-Making and On and Off: Jewelry in the Wider Cultural Field. Both books are looking good. The first one seemed far more interesting than the second. This is of course just my opinion.

At the same time there is plenty to see in Maxvorstadt, a district in central Munich. One of the main attractions since 2004 is The Danner Rotunda – permanent contemporary jewellery exposition at Die Neue Sammlung and a special display of an outstanding jewellery artist’s work like Tone Vigeland this year.

The exhibition openings at Die Neue Sammlung bring together a significant number of visitors. To meet with fellow jewellery artists, collectors and other enthusiasts becomes as easy as it is to lose oneself in the crowd. It is also a place for Mobile Exhibitions as noMADs, Master students from the PXL-MAD School of Arts, Hasselt (Moana Andreani, Kristy Bujanic, Lara Ceuterick, Pia David).

Across the street from Die Neue Sammlung there is Galerie Wittenbrink, hosting Otto Künzli this year. The gallery provides a neat exposition with welcoming staff and excellent choice of artists.

AkademieGalerie is always hard to find unless you know you’re supposed to look underground in the U-Bahn station Universität. The gallery space is ascetic and this year it presented the works of Joohee Han, Shachar Cohen and Samira Goetz within the exhibition Vagabond Heaven.
